Foundational learning first, so every child can thrive!

SYSTEM REFORM: OUR APPROACH

We believe foundational learning outcomes in government school systems can be improved at scale if two key levers are addressed: quality of education in schools (supply) and parental awareness (demand) and involvement in their children’s foundational learning years. Our approach addresses both: strengthening government school systems and empowering parents to engage more deeply in their children’s learning and well-being. This ensures schools deliver better foundational education, with parents as active allies..

Foundational Learning Improvement Programme (FLIP)

Madhi’s Foundational Learning Improvement Programme (FLIP) is anchored in a 6T framework shaped by our experience working with large state systems. We believe foundational learning reform succeeds only when all six elements are addressed together, not in isolation. The framework is localised to each district or state with a strong focus on impact. Key outcomes include an 89-percentage-point increase in teacher mentor support visits, a five-rank improvement for Tamil Nadu in national literacy and numeracy, and performance gains in Meghalaya that exceeded control cohorts across all critical literacy and numeracy competencies.

DEMAND SIDE: Working with Parent Communities

Communities Enabling Foundational Learning (CEFL)

Parental involvement plays a key role in a child’s learning but is often overlooked, especially in low-income communities. CEFL (localised as Veedum Vizhippum in Tamil Nadu) supports parents and caregivers to help children learn at home, engage with schools, and advocate for quality foundational education. The programme has led to a 19% increase in parental awareness of foundational learning and 23% higher learning gains compared to much lower improvements in control groups.
